Two hundred feet below the gnomish enclave of Jzadirune lies the Malachite Fortress, a stronghold build by dwarves and gnomes to guard against intrusions from the Underdark. When the gnomes abandoned Jzadirune, they left the dwarves to maintain the Malachite Fortress. Their leader, a righteous dwarven defender named Zenith Splintershield, foolisly decided to wage a campaign against the Underdark. He took his best fighting dwarves into the bowels of the world and was never seen again.
